Reflection of 6th Lecture

In this lecture, we were given an exercise on how to analyze qualitative data. Based on the responses, we searched for the keywords to create themes. Then, we categorized the findings according to these themes and identify the number of respondents for each theme. It was quite confusing at the first place, but once we were able to capture the flow, it was getting easy. This exercise was so useful for us because certain things need to be learned by doing.
Naturally, some people could see more themes than others. Luckily, they are gifted. It proved that different people, different perception, different interpretation. There is no right or wrong. It is all about the way we see and think.

Reflection of 5th Lecture

The instrumentation is the process of preparing to collect data. Instrument is the tool or device that we are going to use to obtain the data. The are many instruments used by researchers. The chosen instrument must be valid. In other words, it measures what is supposed to measure. Regarding to my topic, at first I thought mine would be pre-test, post-test and questionnaire. After I've read our text book, it is more practical if i replace the questionnaire with pictorial attitude scale. It is suitable to the primary school students to indicate how they feel about the intervention. I can use emoticons with sad and happy face to indicate whether they agree or disagree.

Reflection of 4th Lecture

This time we learned about quantitative and qualitative research. Then I knew that I was wrong. My topic must be a quantitative research because I would collect numerical data from the pre-test and post-test on my samples which represents the population. Obviously it would be an experimental research. Actually, I've learned more during the writing process. As I've planned to carry out an experimental research, I have to consider the EXTRANEOUS VARIABLES. These variables more or less would affect the internal validity of the experiment. I can see that the researcher could tend to be biased in marking the post-test in order to gain successful result. Regarding the population and sampling, my topic is for the Year 5 English Language students population. Due to the practicality during the intervention period, I've chosen cluster sampling plus it is useful for education research.

Reflection of 3rd Lecture

Generally, I've captured some idea on what am I going to do with my topic "Using Collaborative Writing in Improving Year 5 Students' Narrative Writing". Its a qualitative experimental research I suppose. I'm going to do Pretest-Posttest on them. The collaborative writing will focus on group work.
I hope I'm on the right track. But I have to add 1 more research question.

Reflection of 2nd Lecture

This reflection is done a bit late than it should be I guess.. I have to do some revisions first and relate what I've learned with what I'm going to do.
After I've done some sort of revisions on the research proposal, literature review and especially on research questions since we have to submit our topic starting yesterday, for me the research questions part is the gist or in other words, the subject matter on the topic that we are going to do research.
Besides, I need as much as I could for the literature review to support my topic. Though I was planning on something to attract the rural pupils' interest to learn English, it could be quite vague. How am i going to measure interest?? Observation?? Experiment??
So, I've decided to do something on improving their writing because it's more focusing on the language skills.

Reflection of 1st Lecture

At the end of the day, I do understand about what the research is though I already knew what does it mean by the word 'research'.
Then, I know that the starting point for the research can be from something weighing on my mind, the problems I'm facing.. the questions come across my mind.. the doubt I stumble upon..
By the way.. it must be something that can me measured.. can I measure the interest of my pupils to learn English???
Moreover.. as far as I concern from the lecture is it has something to do with variables; independent or dependent variables..
So.. the problems I'm facing in school is to attract my pupils to learn English. I want them to use English at home as well. How could this problem be a catchy topic?
